Lee Dong Uk Benigno is one of our Confreres from South Korea. After accomplishing his theological studies in Urbaniana(Rome), he was sent to Kenya for the pastoral experience. Benigno arrived in Kenya last year (2010). After spending six months in Kenya, the Kenyan regional council appointed him to the vocation and animation centre in Ouganda to continue his pastoral experience.
On the occasion of his birthday which we are celebrating today 5th of January, I kindly wanted to know his opinion with regard to his experience in Africa. LEE Dong UK Benigno has already completed one year in Africa: Kenya (6 months) and Uganda (6 months). One year seems to be short, but he said that it was enough for him to review his past experience towards the future. He understood that he needed to be humble and not to prejudice about other cultures in order to communicate with other people. This fact is still helping him to feel loved and to love others. Before joining Kiwanga (Vocation and Animation Centre in Ouganda), LEE said that he did not have any idea about such appointment because he taught life would be difficult for him and he would be facing other many challenges: different people, language, cultures and so on… According to LEE, since his arrival he has always been helped by Fr. Charles Kachingiri who does not consider him a Seminarian, but a Collaborator, member and Confrere. They share their difficulties, challenges and also Joy. This makes him to feel strong. LEE sincerely feels that if he was not sent to Africa, he would not make this wonderful experience in his life. If he remained in Italy, he would not have known another context of mission. This experience in Africa is increasing more and more his missionary zeal. He loves Africa and his hope is to come back after his priestly ordination if God permits. Within this month of January, he is going to dedicate himself to learning better Luganga language so that he can be more involved with people, to experience more and to share lives. I, Jean-Marie, totally agree with LEE Dong UK Benigno and also believe that one who intends to minister to another culture needs to become familiar with the other cultures. He moves from one culture to another in which he lives and works. In other words, the sharing with Lee Dong Uk Benigno made me recall the word of a great protestant missionary in his book, “Creating Understanding”. The pastor Mc. Donald Smith believes that in order to evangelize other people, any missionary needs an understanding of culture that will enable him to communicate. The missionary is called to identify himself or to be involved with the local people and their culture. The steps to proper involvement are to know the audience, learn the language, share experiences, participate in the culture and understand the beliefs. This process is vital to the successful missionary work. Apostle Paul even followed the same steps. When speaking to the Jews, he followed the Jewish custom; to those under the law, he became like one under the law… (1 Cor. 9: 19-22). Avanti in Domino LEE Dung UK Benigno and Happy Birthday! Congratulations also to Fr. Charles Kachingiri for his wonderful work among the people of God in Kiwanga.
